| Our country, Ghana, is a fascinating place
with so much to it. It is about the same size in area as Great Britain and had a
population of around 18 million in 1998. Until the country's present frontiers took shape
in the early part of this century, what is today the Republic of Ghana comprised of many
independent states and kingdoms. Through a number of
"Treaties" of "Friendship" and forced annexations, the independent
states were merged as one territory under the British imperial rule. In 1876, the British
moved the administrative capital from Cape Coast to Accra, where it has remained ever
since. |

| On the 6th of March 1957 the
British colony of the Gold Coast became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve
independence from colonial rule under the Pan-Africanist visionary leader Kwame Nkrumah.
The country adopted the name of the ancient West African Kingdom of Ghana to became the
independent nation of Ghana. In 1960 the country adopted a republican constitution and
became the Republic of Ghana. There are over
a hundred ethno-linguistic groups, all further subdivided into numerous cultural and
linguistic units. Major ethnic groups are the Akan, Ewe, Mole-Dagbane , Guan, and
Ga-Dangme.
